Accessibility & Web Accessibility
for everyone.
What does digital accessibility mean?
Digital accessibility (also known as web accessibility, or a11y for short) means that people can use a digital resource regardless of physical, sensory, or cognitive limitations—whether with a mouse, keyboard, screen reader, or voice control.
The standard for this is the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) with their four principles: perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust. An accessible website is therefore almost always a better website—for search engines, for conversion, and above all for the people who use it.
Approximately 7.9 million people in Germany live with a severe disability, and nearly 19 million are over 65—not to mention countless temporary and situational limitations. Accessibility is therefore not a solution for a minority, but a better solution for the majority of usage scenarios.

Why Accessibility Is Now Mandatory
The Act to Strengthen Accessibility (BFSG) has been in effect since June 28, 2025. It transposes the European Accessibility Act (EAA) into German law and, for the first time, requires private companies to make certain digital products and services accessible. This particularly affects online stores, booking and contract processes, banking services, and consumer-facing platforms. Violations can result in fines of up to €100,000 as well as the risk of cease-and-desist letters.
Compliance is the entry ticket here, not a differentiator. Those who view accessibility as a measure of product quality gain reach, reputation, and resilience—larger target audiences, less friction in the conversion funnel, and more stable software.
