Digital Inclusion

What does digital accessibility mean?

Digital accessibility (also known as web accessibility, or a11y for short) means that people can use a digital resource regardless of physical, sensory, or cognitive limitations—whether with a mouse, keyboard, screen reader, or voice control.
The standard for this is the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) with their four principles: perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust. An accessible website is therefore almost always a better website—for search engines, for conversion, and above all for the people who use it.
Approximately 7.9 million people in Germany live with a severe disability, and nearly 19 million are over 65—not to mention countless temporary and situational limitations. Accessibility is therefore not a solution for a minority, but a better solution for the majority of usage scenarios.

Why Accessibility Is Now Mandatory

The Act to Strengthen Accessibility (BFSG) has been in effect since June 28, 2025. It transposes the European Accessibility Act (EAA) into German law and, for the first time, requires private companies to make certain digital products and services accessible. This particularly affects online stores, booking and contract processes, banking services, and consumer-facing platforms. Violations can result in fines of up to €100,000 as well as the risk of cease-and-desist letters.
Compliance is the entry ticket here, not a differentiator. Those who view accessibility as a measure of product quality gain reach, reputation, and resilience—larger target audiences, less friction in the conversion funnel, and more stable software. Our Range of Services

Our Accessibility Services in Detail

From the initial assessment to ongoing monitoring, we cover the entire process of creating an accessible website and accessible software—either as individual services or as a complete package, depending on your needs.

When is an accessibility audit a good idea?

An accessibility audit is particularly worthwhile in these situations:

  • You operate an online store, a portal, or a booking or contract system for consumers.
  • Your service falls under the BFSG, and you need a solution that is verifiably WCAG-compliant.
  • A relaunch or new project is in the works, and accessibility needs to be considered from the very beginning.
  • You have received a warning or a complaint from a user.
  • Automated tools flag errors, but you need a reliable, prioritized assessment.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Accessibility & BSFG

Effective June 28, 2025, the Accessibility Enhancement Act requires many companies to make their digital products and services accessible. This primarily affects B2C offerings such as online stores, booking systems, and banking services. We’ll check for you whether and to what extent you’re affected.
Generally, companies that offer specific products or services to consumers. For services, there is an exception for micro-enterprises (fewer than 10 employees and a maximum annual revenue of €2 million). The specific use case is what matters—we’ll determine this together.
That depends on the scope and complexity of your website. An initial quick check is often in the low four-digit range; a full audit is based on the number of pages and the range of features. You’ll receive a transparent estimate in advance.
No. On average, automated tests detect only about half of the barriers. Keyboard and screen reader operation, focus flow, and comprehensibility can only be reliably tested manually. That is why we combine both approaches.
The WCAG is the international standard for accessible web content. BITV 2.0 is the German regulation that is essentially based on the harmonized standard EN 301 549 and thus on the WCAG. In practice, we test against WCAG criteria and map the results to the applicable requirements.
Accessibility is an ongoing process. We integrate automated accessibility checks into the CI/CD pipeline, train your teams, and provide ongoing monitoring to ensure that new content and features remain accessible.
