Although e-Commerce software as well as marketplace systems pursue similar goals, there are some differences.
On the one hand, both technologies differ in their functionality. This means that e-Commerce software is usually a complete solution that offers all the tools and functions needed for an online shop. It includes functions such as product catalogues, shopping cart, payment processing, shipping tracking and customer management.
Marketplace systems, on the other hand, are platforms on which different suppliers can sell products, such as Amazon. A marketplace provides the technical infrastructure to bring sellers and buyers together, process transactions and manage the operation of the marketplace. Unlike e-Commerce software, the marketplace does not operate the online shop itself, but allows other sellers to operate their own shops within the platform.
There are also some differences in terms of scalability and visibility.
